On May 23, the Vancouver Asian Canadian Theatre presents a stage reading of Minh Ly’splay Ga Ting (developed in partnership with The Frank Theatre Company) at the Richmond Cultural Centre.

Minh Ly is a new writing talent and Toronto-based performer who is currently touring Axis Theatre’s new TYA show, Raven Meets the Monkey King across BC and Saskatchewan, and will star in the upcoming production of Proof by David Auburn at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre, May 30th – June 9th.

Ga Ting was developed through VACT’s 2012 MSG Theatre Lab and this will be the second reading of Minh Ly’s first play.

Over the course of a meal, Mai and David hope to learn who their deceased son, Kevin, truly was through the son’s ex-boyfriend, Matthew. What Matthew reveals during the evening often clashes with David’s set beliefs. Mai tries to be hold things together, but she ultimately has plans of her own. A seemingly pleasant evening soon turns into one filled with accusations, and ultimatums. They all come to realize that closure may not happen over the course of a meal.

The reading in May will be brought to life once again by returning cast members – Linda Leong Sum (The Forbidden Phoenix, Red Letters), former city councillor and veteran actor BC Lee, and Jessie Award winner Brian Sutton. This riveting play about Chinese parents coming to terms with their homosexual son will be directed by Leo Award winning actor and producer Rick Tae and dramaturged by C.E. Gatchalian (The Frank Theatre Company, formerly Screaming Weenie).

Originally from Toronto, Minh Ly left for Vancouver to train at Studio 58, in which he is a graduate. He recently made a move back to his hometown of Toronto, but is now back in the west coast in the new year to tour with Axis Theatre in Raven Meets The Monkey King. CELEBRATING THE FIREHALL’S 30TH ANNIVERSARY!

The arts are a celebration of the senses and the 2013 BC BUDS Spring Arts Fair will celebrate all those senses as we toast to the end of the Firehall’s 30^th season.  This year we asked BC Buds participants to send us projects which celebrate and entertain the senses; Nonsense, Two sense, Commonsense, Absence, the Sixth sense, and those usual senses, sight, touch, hear, smell, and taste.

Join us for some or ALL of this year’s BC BUDS, celebrating all (or some) of the senses as we celebrate our 30^thseason.

BC Buds celebrates the talent and creativity of established and emerging BC artists over the course of three jam-packed days of music, theatre, dance and interdisciplinary work. Performances take place in all the nooks and hidden crannies of the Firehall, creating a spectacular environment for audiences to experience new work. Weekend afternoon also feature family and child-friendly programming including storytelling, music, and theatre.

With more than 30 different artists and groups presenting new and experimental work, the BC Buds Spring Arts Fair is Vancouver’s longest running showcase of budding artists and budding theatre, dance, music and interdisciplinary works.

BC Buds is a by-donation event.

Jacques Lalonde is an amazing treasure of a Vancouver performer. Any Fringe production that includes him is a must-see, and that’s just one aspect of his career. This event is sure to be fun. 

Excellent selection of documentary films. Some free tickets can be won via Twitter and Facebook contests.

A scientific symposium for free. If you like particle accelerators, how could you miss this? The scientific discussions sound very interesting.

Scrivener’s Monthly is pleased to present Yann Chateigné Tytelman discussing Xenochronies on Tuesday April 23rd at 8pm in the Grand Luxe Hall at the Western Front.

Xenochrony, a word that derives from the Greek xenos, strange or alien, and chronos, time, is a studio-based musical technique developed in the early 1960s by composer Frank Zappa. Xenochrony is executed by extracting a guitar solo or other musical part from its original context and placing it into a completely different song. “The musical result”, says Zappa, “is the one of two musicians, who were never in the same room at the same time, playing at two different rates in two different moods for two different purposes, when blended together, yielding a third result which is musical and synchronizes in a strange way”. Starting from here, we will explore a series of artists works who, luminously, use similar techniques of montage and adventurous dislocation to produce a specific form of knowledge. To be evoked: the writing of history “in between science and fiction”, fables, “adventurous coherences” and documentary fictions, dust breeding, fictocriticism and “the dispersed science”.
