Presented in celebration of Black History Month

The vibrant rhythms and sounds of Afro-Cuban dance and music are featured in the next edition of The Dance Centre’s popular Discover Dance! noon series, with an exciting program which celebrates the rich cultural heritage of Africa and the Caribbean. This special presentation features an ensemble of dancers and musicians led by Israel ‘Toto’ Berriel, a renowned traditional Afro-Cuban percussionist and vocalist who has toured internationally. Presented in celebration of Black History Month.

Israel ‘Toto’ Berriel, is a traditional Afro-Cuban percussionist and vocalist from Matanzas, Cuba. Toto began his professional music career at the age of 16 in Los Yumurinos, a group formed by the children of the famous groups Los Muñequitos de Matanzas and AfroCuba de Matanzas, two well-recognized traditional Afro-Cuban groups.  In 1988 he joined AfroCuba de Matanzas and after two years was invited to join the world’s best-known Rumba group, Los Muñequitos de Matanzas, where he worked for twelve years learning the entire Afro-Cuban repertoire. Deeply rooted in Afro-Cuban traditions, he is also comfortable in different musical environments such as jazz, modern music, soul and funk amongst others. He played on the 2001 Latin Grammy Award Winning recording La Rumba Soy Yo with the Cuban Rumba All-Stars, and has toured all over the world performing and teaching. He is now resident in Vancouver where he teaches at Vancouver Community College and plays with Mazacote Latin dance band, performing at events including the Vancouver International Salsa Festival, Harmony Arts Festival and the Vancouver International Jazz Festival.www.totoberriel.com.
