Except in the Unlikely Event of War is a dark, political satire on the use of war as a means of societal control, the politicization of art & media, the mutability of truth. Mixing fact and fiction, this exciting new play inter-weaves three different stories.

In 1966, at a remote weather research station in the Canadian Arctic, a Special Study Group has been secretly convened for a specific mission: to determine the nature of the problems that would confront society if and when a condition of permanent peace should arrive. Asked to pursue their task with as much objectivity as possible, their conclusions are unlike anything the Group had dared to consider: that war is in civilization’s best interests, and that political authority over life and death is the binding force that holds everything in place. In 2015, with the Conservative Party freshly re-elected to a majority, global warming has progressed at such a rate that the once-frozen Northwest Passage has thawed, creating a battleground over shipping lanes and an ocean’s worth of untapped resources. In the northern outpost of Resolute Bay, abrasively conservative radio host Tommy Bane takes to the microphone to complain about strange new security measures, but is upstaged by the unconfirmed rumours that a Chinese nuclear submarine has made an appearance in Canada’s supposedly sovereign waters. And in 2013, a Vancouver theatre company is in rehearsal for their controversial new play, Except in the Unlikely Event of War. But the process starts to get shaky when an egotistical star starts to ‘radicalize’ the play, an awkward love triangle threatens to halt the rehearsals, and a sudden disappearance of government funding threatens to shut down the entire show.

Join us for a public reading of this audacious new work, written by Sean Devine and directed by Richard Wolfe, to be followed by a panel discussion reflecting the play’s themes. This event is produced by SFU’s Vancity Office of Community Engagement, as part of Horseshoes & Hand Grenades Theatre’s Pull the Pin community engagement series, in partnership with Pi Theatre. Except in the Unlikely Event of Warwill be co-produced by Pi Theatre and Horseshoes & Hand Grenades Theatre in Fall 2013.
